Friday Favorites: A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man by James Joyce

Happy Friday, book lovers! On my bookstagram account I have decided to share a favorite book of mine each Friday. I thought it would be a nice ritual to take up here on the blog as well.

Today you can see A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man by James Joyce. It is one of my favorite books from 2016 so far. I read it for a modernism course at university, but I am so glad that it was assigned because I don’t know if I would have picked it up on my own.

The name James Joyce seems synonymous with difficult literature, but I found A Portrait of the Artist to be very accessible. It is a coming-of-age novel about Stephen Dedalus and consequently follows Stephen from his childhood through his adolescence and up into his early adult years. Many consider it to be at least partially autobiographical.

I recommend checking it out if you’re interested in modernist literature or are looking for a book that falls into the category of Literature with a capital ‘L’.

Have a splendid weekend!
